What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? 

Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport and a self-defense system created by the legendary Gracie family Especially instrumental to the art’s development was Helio Gracie, the youngest of the five Gracie brothers.  Due to his thin and frail physique, he was forced to adapt the techniques he learned, so that a smaller, weaker person could overcome an adversary of greater size and strength. When it Comes to Jiu Jitsu, "Time on the Mat" Means Repetition, Repetition, Repetition

Watching Anthony Pettis's very slick arm bar to finish Benson Henderson and take the UFC lighweight championship, I can't help but think about repetition when it comes to Jiu Jitsu. 

I guarantee Pettis spent hours upon hours just running through that arm bar set up until it was complete and almost undetectable. 

There is a million moves and possible submissions in Jiu Jitsu, but as the great Bruce Lee said: 

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."

Jiu Jitsu Class Review - breaking down the posture

Great Jiu Jitsu class tonight. Coach Dean had us working on breaking down the posture from a bottom guard position.

Kids Martial Arts and Self Defence Move of the Week: the arm drag

We have started integrating is some more stand up and control options in the kids martial arts and self defence class.

I have always been a fan of the arm drag when it comes to setting up the takedown. For self-defence purposes, wrist control to arm drag to a body clinch is very effective.
